Children's Online Privacy Protection Act

Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act Notification

Classes will be using various Web 2.0 tools over the course of the school-year. The majority of Web 2.0 tools used will integrate with our school email system. Before using these tools, we wanted to make you aware of federal regulations that apply to operators of websites and require parental consent when they collect information on children under 13, as described below.

In order for students to use this program/service, certain personal information must be provided to the web site operator. Under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), these websites must provide parental notification and obtain parental consent before collecting personal information from children under the age of 13. For more information on COPPA, please visit http://www.ftc.gov/privacy/coppafaqs.shtm. These sites cannot collect data beyond name, birthdate, and the school-provided email address.

Schools are permitted to consent to the collection of this personal information on behalf of parents of students, thereby eliminating the need for individual parental consent given directly to the web site operator. Before doing so, the District is providing you with this notice and opportunity to opt out.

Please take a moment to look over the resources provided to you to ensure your child’s safety. We will have your student use his or her district-provided email account for all educationally-based activities. Should you like to be informed about every site your child is registered for using the school-provided email, please contact the school in writing and the list will be provided.

After reviewing these sites, if you would NOT like your child to have their own account for any of the provided sites, please contact us in writing. If we do not hear from you otherwise, we will create the account for your student.
